Apple STEM and Baking!
Today was a really busy day in Room 2. We started the day with a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) activity involving apples. The challenge was to make a container that had a handle that could hold 3 apples while the kids walked 10 steps. The kids had a great time working together to try to make the best container they could. After lunch, we made applesauce. The kids worked hard to core, peel, and cut apples. We put them in the crockpot and will enjoy a snack tomorrow morning. The last activity of the day was making mini apple pies. We enjoyed our pies while we watched a video about Johnny Appleseed.

Apple Window Decorations
Today we started a project that is new for my apple week activities. We made apple window clings. The decorations need to dry over night, but the students will be able to take them home tomorrow and they should stick to their windows at home.

Apple Activity Day!
Today we did different activities in the room about apples. We first switched classrooms with the other first grade class. Our class did activities with Mrs. Schultz in her room and then we came back to our room to do a few other activities. We made already eaten apples out of popsicle sticks. We made apple faces and completed and apple word search. Tomorrow will be another fun day!

Happy Apple Week!
Yesterday was the start of Apple Week. This is a week with all things apples. we help celebrate Johnny Appleseed's birthday with apple reading, apple math, apple science, and of course apple eating. Yesterday we went on our field trip to the apple orchard. The kids had a great time and learned a lot.
We were greeted by the workers at the apple orchard. |
We were able to pick pumpkins. |
We went on a hayride. |
We walked through the store where all of the apples and apple goodies are sold. |
All of the students got to pick four apples to take home. |
Everyone got to enjoy some apple cider. |
We took a trip into the refrigerator to see where the apples are stored. |
The students saw where the apples are washed. |
They showed us how the apples are graded and sorted. |
We learned a little about how they make apple cider. The machine was being washed, so we didn't see it in action, but it was still cool. |
We finished by learning the important role bees have to play in making apples. |

Happy Birthday Nora S.!
Yesterday we celebrated Nora S.'s birthday. She brought in the books Amelia Bedelia and the Cat by Herman Parish. I remember reading these books when I was little. The kids love seeing how Amelia Bedelia interprets what others tell her to do. She is always great at providing a laugh. This is one of the first Amelia Bedelia books for our classroom library. It is a level 2 "I Can Read" book which the kids love doing on their own.

Happy Birthday Skylynn!
Today, we celebrated Skylynn's seventh birthday. To celebrate, she brought in The Good Little Bad Little Pig! by Margaret Wise Brown. It was a cute book about a little boy who wanted a pig for a pet. He didn't want just any pig, he wanted a pig that was a little good and a little bad. He got just what he wanted. It was a cute story with cute pictures.

Happy Birthday Manny!
Today we celebrated Manny's 7th birthday. He brought in the book Curious George Makes Pancakes by Margaret and H.A. Rey. There were a lot of great vocabulary words in the book to discuss and talk about with the kids. There were also some times where the students had to use the pictures to figure something out. The kids loved these added challenges to the story. It is another great addition to our classroom library.
