Dairy Week Wrap Up

We finished Dairy Week with some activities in the classroom. We made cows out of paper plates and did a dairy search and find.

Dairy Farm Field Trip

The third day of Dairy Week was spent visiting a dairy farm. We learned all kinds of things about the way cows are milked and fed.

We visited the milk house and saw where the milk is stored.

We saw the cows being milked.

We saw where the cows live in their barns.

We got to feel the water bed that the cows have to lay on in their barn.

The baby cows did not want to be petted, but we did get to see them.

We had a small lesson on the importance of getting three servings of dairy a day.

We finished by playing a game of dairy memory.

Ice Cream Party

Our second day of Dairy Week was celebrated by having an ice cream party. We had vanilla ice cream with all the toppings. The kids loved picking out which ones they wanted.

Dairy Week!

We have been busy at work this week to celebrate Dairy Week. We started off the week by making ice cream. The kids had a great time adding the ingredients to their bags, shaking it with ice, and then of course enjoying the ice cream they made.

Dairy Week Finale!

We finished Dairy Week with a grand finale ice cream party. We had vanilla ice cream with all the fixings: caramel sauce, chocolate sauce, cool whip, cherries, and sprinkles galore. The kids had a great time choosing what they wanted on top. It was a delicious way to end the week.

Making Ice Cream

Today for Dairy Week, we made our own ice cream. We got lucky with the weather and were able to go outside to make it.

We put all of our ingredients in a bag: milk, sugar, and vanilla.

We added that bag to a big bag of ice and rock salt. Then we shook it.

Eventually, the milk, sugar, and vanilla harden to make the ice cream. Then we eat it!

Dairy Week Field Trip

Yesterday, we took a field trip to a dairy farm. Since we have been focusing on all things dairy, we ventured down to a local farm to see where our milk comes from.

We were welcomed in the holding barn. There, we learned about where the cows live, what they eat, and how the farm works.

We got up close and personal with some cows.

We saw some calves and even got to pet them.

The calves were five days old.

We learned about different dairy foods and the importance of getting three servings of dairy a day.

We played a memory game with different dairy items.

We went to the milk house to see where the milk is stored.

We saw the milking parlor where the cows get milked.

Dairy Week STEM

This week, we are celebrating all things dairy. We are spending our time learning about cows, farms, foods made with milk, and all things moo. On Tuesday, we also incorporated STEM activities into our dairy activities. STEM is taking science, technology, engineering, and math and doing a project with all of them. We talked about farms and focused on the kinds of fences on a farm. The students then took different materials to build fences of their own. The fences had to be a certain height, length, and be able to hold animals. We had some very creative ideas.

Ice Cream Party!

Yesterday, we rounded out Dairy Week with an ice cream party. The kids were able to enjoy regular ice cream with lots of different choices for toppings. They devoured their ice cream. I would say it was a big success.

Dairy Farm Trip

Today we went to a dairy farm and got up close and personal with some cows. We saw how the cows get milked, where they live, and learned about dairy foods as well.

We went to the milk house to see where the milk is stored.

We watched the workers hook the cows up to the milking machines.

We all watched as 16 cows got milked at the same time.

We went into the barn where the cows are when they are not getting milked.

We got up close and personal during the cows snack time.

It was a little chilly in the barn, but the kids loved seeing the cows.

We got to test out the waterbed that the cows get to relax on throughout the day.

We met 2 calves that were just 5 days old.

The kids loved getting to pet the baby cows.

We learned about making sure we are getting 3 servings of dairy each day to build strong bones.

We played a matching memory game to finish our trip.
