Field Trip to the Dairy Farm!

Today we went to Kelsay Farms in Whiteland. The kids had a great time. Here are some pictures from the day!

First we went into the milk house and saw where the milk is stored.

Next we went into the milk parlor. We saw where and how the cows got milked.

There were 32 cows getting milked all at once.

Then we went into the barn to see where the cows can wait until it is their turn to get milked. The farm milks 500 cows three times each day. We saw cows that are three and four years old.

We were able to get up close and personal with the cows.

It was perfect weather for the field trip.

We were able to pet two baby cows. One was seven weeks old and the other was 4 weeks old.

The kids loved the calves.

Lastly, we talked about the importance of dairy foods and making sure we get three servings each day. The kids were able to enjoy and cheese snack at the very end.

Homemade Ice Cream

Today we made our very own ice cream. We went outside to enjoy the beautiful day. We combined 1/2 cup of milk, 1 tablespoon of sugar, and 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla. We put that into a little bag. We then put the little bag into a big bag that had one big scoop of ice and 5 tablespoons of ice cream salt. Then the kids shake it until it turns into ice cream. They had a great time and did a great job. Here are a couple pictures of the kids working hard.

Dairy Week!

Today marks the beginning of Dairy Week. Very similar to Apple Week in the Fall, Dairy Week will consist of classroom activities, field trips, and lots of fun all revolving around dairy things. Today we switched rooms with Mrs. Schultz's class and did different activities. Here are some pictures of the cows we made today.

Cultural Day

The Thursday before Spring Break was Cultural Day. The day was full of different activities, games, crafts, and dancing to expose the kids to different countries around the world and how they might live a little differently than we do. We started the day with Mass. At Mass, we had a procession of different saints from different countries around the world. After Mass, we watched a storyteller tell a story about Christopher Columbus. Then we went to lunch where we got to try food from all different countries. After lunch, we went to the gym to play some different games from around the world. After the games, we came back to the room for some craft time. Next, we learned some different dances from three different countries. Lastly, we saw an African drum performance. The day was very busy, but the kids had a great time. Here are some pictures from the day.

Happy Birthday Ben B.!

The Wednesday before spring break, we celebrated Ben B.'s birthday. He brought the book Stink: The Incredible Shrinking Kid by Megan McDonald. This book is a chapter book and we read two of the chapters so far. The kids are loving the book. When we return from spring break, we will continue to read one or two chapters each day. This is a great book to introduce the kids to chapter books. We can't wait to see how the book ends!
